Managing Performance: Practical Tips for Managers

by | Aug 26, 2026 | HR Blog

Managing performance effectively is one of the most important responsibilities of any manager. It’s not simply about addressing concerns when things go wrong. Good performance management is about setting clear expectations, having regular conversations and giving people the support they need to succeed.

Performance management is an ongoing process. It shouldn’t begin and end with an annual appraisal. Regular check-ins, feedback and reviews allow managers and employees to discuss progress, identify challenges and make adjustments before small issues become bigger ones.

When concerns do arise, act early. Avoiding difficult conversations rarely makes problems disappear. Addressing concerns promptly, fairly and supportively can help resolve issues before they escalate and gives employees the opportunity to improve.

It’s also important to set clear expectations from the outset. Agreeing SMART objectives that align with wider team and organisational goals helps employees understand what success looks like and gives managers something meaningful to review.

Regular one-to-ones and constructive feedback are key. These conversations shouldn’t just focus on what isn’t working. Recognising achievements, discussing development and understanding any barriers to performance can help maintain engagement and motivation.

Managers should also consider coaching rather than simply managing. Asking open questions, listening actively and encouraging employees to find solutions can build ownership and confidence.

Finally, record and follow through. Keeping clear notes of discussions, agreed actions and support provided helps ensure consistency and accountability, while also providing a useful record if concerns continue.

Ultimately, effective performance management is about being clear, consistent, supportive and proactive. When managers have the confidence to address concerns early and maintain regular, constructive conversations, both employees and organisations are more likely to thrive.
