McDonald’s case: Sexual harassment as a serious workplace issue

by | Jul 27, 2023 | HR Blog

More than 100 UK McDonald’s staff have spoken out about the ‘toxic work culture’ of sexual assault, harassment, racism and bullying according to a new investigation by the BBC. Most of them also admit that senior managers failed to act after workers made complaints about the inappropriate behaviours.

What should you do if you are sexually harassed at work?
Internal routes

  • Report it: You can and should report it to your manager, HR representative, or trade union, and they will act
  • Maintain a record: Include dates, timings, and specifics about what occurred, as well as any pertinent emails. These may come in handy if you decide to report it.

External routes

  • Seek assistance: Victim Support offers a free and confidential 24-hour helpline and live chat service. Contact victimsupport.org.uk/live-chat or call 0808 16 89 111.
  • Contact the police: If sexual harassment develops into violence, threats, or sexual assault, contact the police by dialling 101. Call 999 if you are in danger.
